Our Burundi Single Origin Beans

Full bodied with a creamy mouthfeel, toffee sweetness and juicy blackcurrant acidity.

These coffee beans come from Migoti – a world class producer of Arabica coffee based in the highlands above Burundi, overlooking Lake Tanganyika and eastern Congo.  Migoti’s vision is to connect local Burundian coffee farmers, through quality coffee processing and transparent supply chains, with buyers and roasters from around the world.

The Migoti washing station serves a community of 50,000 people who grow the red bourbon cultivar of Arabica coffee. The washing station is based between 5,500 and 6,500 metres above sea level – with harvest taking place between March & June.

Coffee from Burundi...

Geographically, Burundi is a relatively small country and only has a population of around 11.5 million. Of this total, an estimated 800,000 to 1,000,000 families work in the coffee industry, representing 8% of the overall population.

Although Burundi’s exports are small compared to other African coffee giants like Kenya and Ethiopia, the Republic of Burundi continues to make a name for itself in the world of specialty coffee, ranking as the 29th coffee-producing country in the world.

Burundi’s hot, wet climate and high elevations with volcanic, nitrogen-rich soil make it ideal an ideal location for growing coffee. Thanks to these high-growing elevations, Burundi coffee is fruity and vibrant with citrus, floral notes, and even hints of honey and pineapple.

Supporting coffee farming communities...

For every pack of our House Range Single Origin Burundi coffee we sell, we help fund the construction of a community reservoir.

Currently in Burundi water is dispensed via water points and communal taps. Families have to walk to fill up large containers and carry them home again.

The new reservoir will be located near a washing station, providing families with clean water in the coffee farming community of Kinama. Migoti will also be constructing a pipe network to carry and distribute the water to nearby communities.
