Costa Coffee To Allow Customers To Refill Water Bottles For Free

Concerns are growing around the world about the amount of plastic that we use and waste, much of which ends up in our oceans – causing serious problems on a global scale.

And now it seems that businesses are joining the fight against this waste, by allowing customers to refill water bottles for free… Costa Coffee being one of them. It’s thought that the new Refill campaign will help to cut plastic bottle usage by tens of millions every year, as well as increasing the availability of high quality drinking water.

The first company to sign up to the water scheme is Whitbread, which both Premier Inn and Costa Coffee are part of. So from March this year, both chains will be offering free drinking water to customers and passersby across 3,000 locations around the UK.

“As an industry with a strong focus on the environment we are passionate about tackling the problems caused by plastic bottles, which clog up rivers and drains, and pollute our seas. By refilling water bottles, we can all help turn this harmful tide of plastic waste.

“This country has some of the best drinking water in the world and we want everyone to benefit from it. This scheme will do that by making it easier for people to refill their bottles wherever they work, rest, shop or play,” Water UK chief executive Michael Roberts said.

This comes after MPs called on the government to bring in a 25p levy on disposable coffee cups to help tackle waste… every year, 2.5 billion disposable cups are thrown away!
